Community Programs
Mallarmé is committed to serve the community through music education and performance that can potentially transform the lives of children and families.
Project MAP Initiative NEW IN 2009!
Project MAP (music, art, poetry) is a year-long, after-school program where Mallarmé teaching artists visit two partner schools several times a week to work with children on specific arts skills. These artists will assist the children in learning the skills necessary to create, compose and perform a large-scale work for public performance. Just as a travel map provides its reader with important directions to certain destinations, Project MAP is designed to be a guided tour through the creative processes that link three of fine arts most important entities, Music, Art and Poetry.
Students will receive hands on training in the fields of music, art and poetic expression from experienced teaching artists including Dr. Marian Harrison from NCCU and Durham CAPS artists. To support the musical basis of the project, the students will also have the opportunity to hear at least two performances of the Mallarmé Chamber Players during the year.
Summer Camp
For the past four years, the Mallarmé Chamber Players has underwritten the costs to provide music instructors for summer camp at TA Grady community center in conjunction with Durham’s Parks and Recreation department. In the summer of 2009, Mallarmé will sponsor 2 1-hour classes per week during seven weeks children’s summer camp session. As part of the curriculum, the campers will participate in a final concert at McDougald Terrace; performers will include the children, Mallarmé artists, and parents and friends from the community.

In addition, Mallarmé runs a week-long intensive music camp at Naples Terrace apartment complex in the Wellons Village area. With the assistance of a local volunteer, Mallarmé recruits children ages 6-12 to participate in the music camp held at their community center. Mallarmé provides instruction in playing the harmonica, chorus and African dance and drumming. The camps runs from August 10-14 for 4 hours a day and Mallarmé provides the camp and lunch free of charge to participants.
Community Concerts
Mallarmé provides concerts throughout the year for social service organizations and public events. At Christmas time we visit organizations like Genesis Home, Rainbow 66 Storehouse and Urban Ministries to spread some cheer by performing familiar holiday music including a sing-along. We also participate in events like National Night Out and Family Fun Day/Back to School organized by the City of Durham Police Department.
